Your Nervous System Might Be the Missing Piece

You eat well. You move your body. You take the supplements. And still, something feels off.

You wake up tired. Your jaw is clenched before your feet hit the floor. Your digestion has a mind of its own. You feel wired and exhausted at the same time.

Sometimes the missing piece isn’t another thing to add. It’s the system running underneath everything else: your nervous system.

Two gears, one body

Your autonomic nervous system works quietly in the background, managing your heart rate, breathing, digestion and more. It has two main modes.

  • Fight or flight (sympathetic). This is your built-in alarm. It sharpens focus, raises heart rate and gets you ready to act.
  • Rest and digest (parasympathetic). This is where repair happens. Digestion, deep sleep, tissue recovery and calm all live here.

Both are healthy. The problem starts when the alarm never fully turns off. Deadlines, poor sleep, illness, grief, constant notifications and old stress can all keep the body braced, even when nothing is actually wrong.

Signs your body may be stuck in stress mode

  • Muscle tension that keeps coming back, especially in the neck, shoulders or jaw
  • Trouble falling asleep, or waking at 3 AM with a racing mind
  • Digestive issues like bloating, constipation or urgency
  • Feeling “tired but wired”
  • Being easily startled, irritable or overwhelmed
  • Getting sick more often or recovering more slowly

These signs don’t diagnose anything on their own. But they’re worth listening to.

Your body organizes around what it can rely on

Dr. Lisa often says regulation isn’t about motivation. It’s biology. When the body experiences steady, safe, predictable inputs, it gradually stops bracing for the unexpected.

That’s good news, because it means small, consistent practices can add up.

Three simple ways to start at home

  1. Lengthen your exhale. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, then out slowly for a count of six to eight. Longer exhales help signal safety to the body. Try five rounds.
  2. Orient to your space. Slowly look around the room and name five things you see. It sounds simple, but it reminds your brain that you are here and you are safe.
  3. Protect your mornings. Before you reach for your phone, get a few minutes of daylight, water and movement. A calmer start sets the tone for the day.
